총장 Larence Summers는 대놓고 그런 따위의 주장을 하기도 했었다.
최근 BBC news에 따르면, 곧 영국 심리학 저널에 실릴 예정이라는 폴 어윙과 리차드 린이라는 두 사람의 연구자의 대략 8만명의 사람들과 또 2만명의 학생을 대상으로 실시했다는 연구는 다음 처럼 요약될 수 있다고 한다. (여기서 테스트는 소위 "일반 인지 능력" -공간 지각 및 언어-에 대한 것이다. )
I.Q. 라는 것이 그리 대단히 심오한 지적 능력을 재는 잣대도 아니고 사실 연습에 의해 더 높은 점수를 받을 수도 있다는 것을 고려했을 때 이 결과를 절대로 과장해석 해서는 않되겠다. 여기서 오히려 주목해야할 사항은 14세 이전의 경우 남여 차이가 없다는 것이다. 즉, 여성이 남성에 비해 결코 과학 이나 수학적 능력에서 genetically 열등하지 않다는 것이다. 그 후의 격차가 얼마나 유의미 한지는 차치 하고 일단 분명 사회적 환경과 분위기 때문에 여성이 상대적으로 과학, 수학계 진출 비율이 남성에 비해 매우 낮음을 이해한다면 어쩌면 위 결과는 단순한 우리 사회의 분위기를 측정한 것에 지나지 않음을 알 수 있다. 그런 의미에서 두 학자의 연구 자체가 매우 불쾌하다고 느낀다.

As far as I know (and I got it from a stats person completely obsessed with IQ), the difference is negliglble; but what is interesting is the pattern of distribution, i.e. there is less variance compared to the male sample. So more dumb men, more intelligent men.I may be biased but I still insist that women tend to prefer (on average) things in their social context. That could perhaps contribute to the difference in the IQ test where the mathematically inclined do well? I have once tested identical twins - one engineer and another a marketing student - and there was a difference of more ten points (Raven, standard deviation 15).

I have also read what Summers said, and it was not exactly 'women are incompetent in this field.' I am also of the opinion (and I am a girl) that there are likely to be gender differences. If it is due to thousands of years of male domination, perhaps it is, but that does not change existing, sometimes glaring, flagrant differences.I am skeptical about the 'we are all created equal' approach. For example, blacks ARE more likely to suffer from sickle cell anaemia. Whites more from cystic fibrosis. I don't think that's racism as such (and I live in South Africa!)
That said, I have read somewhere that female brains, so far known to have more connections between the two spheres, manifest very similar brain patterns to those in the same fields. So they can change. Maybe it is not genetic at all then.

I don't really agree with the 'we are all created equal' approach, either. However the mathematical ability of female physicsts, I have met, is not really different from us, males. The point is that even there are lots of apparant differences in between girls and boys, the ability itself-evne in mathematics and physics- could be equally developed when they are properly trained. You may probably want to read "Lisa Randall" who is the most cited physicst in the world after 1999.

I believe that you find more genetic differences in two individuals from the same race and same gender than in two averaged samples. There are slight variations noted overall, but I believe that individual differences are so great, applying the slight difference to individuals to gauge their future potentials is quite pointless. Macroscopically, it may be noted that not many women study engineering (and therefore draw a conclusion rightly or wrongly that they are somewhat less interested), but it obviously does not mean that the women who do prefer engineering are in any way less competent. I don't think the statement 'there is a statistically significant difference' means much to individuals.I'm just generally against 'we can't say this because this is un PC/ stereotyping' etc.

My personal belief is quite close to yours - that they can be trained, and that if there are any genetic gender differences it can be addressed with training, but that's my personal belief.
